Eric André accuses racial discrimination and detention at Melbourne Airport and says he should not feel “unaccepted” when entering a country

Eric André has continued his mission to denounce airports around the world for alleged racism.

In 2022, the comedian filed a lawsuit against Clayton County police, claiming he was racially profiled by plainclothes police officers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport the year before. Although the suit was dismissed, André and his colleague Clayton English, who was a party to the joint suit, appealed the dismissal.

Now André is after Melbourne Airport in Australia after he was allegedly arrested and racially profiled. To explain the incident and mobilize legal support, the 41-year-old posted an Instagram video on Sunday (18 August). The Trolls join forceswho had completed a 25-hour journey with stops in Los Angeles, Melbourne and Brisbane, was visibly frustrated by the alleged incident.

“I was arrested,” he began in the video below. “I was pulled out of a lineup and put in a special queue in Melbourne where I was thoroughly sniffed by a dog.”

He continued: “This is one of the many times I have been racially discriminated against at the airport. So this is a message to all black, brown and Aboriginal people travelling through Melbourne today, particularly if you are travelling on Qantas International through Terminal 2. Please be careful. They are frisking black, brown and Aboriginal people.”

André then asked for the names of the officers who had stopped him, “or what this program is,” along with information on an Australian lawyer who could help him investigate a discrimination case. He also had a request for those who let him travel to Australia for work, asking them to “provide a police escort or some sort of security escort” or let him fly directly to Brisbane or Sydney.

“I don’t feel safe at Melbourne Airport. I don’t want to be humiliated or racially discriminated against at these airports anymore,” he said. “I don’t want to cut my hair and wear a three-piece suit so I can be treated like a first-class citizen.”

“I shouldn’t feel like I’m not accepted when I enter a country. Shame on the people at Melbourne airport who have to go through this stupid process. I doubt it makes anyone in Melbourne or Australia any safer. I’d love to dig up the statistics on what comes out of this program.”

Although André may still have some way to go in taking legal action against Melbourne Airport, he is not known for backing down. The airport responded to his video by saying that it “does not tolerate racism in any form.”

“We are pursuing your complaint with the Australian Border Force (ABF) and the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), who are responsible for handling all international arrivals at Melbourne Airport and other Australian international gateways,” the message said. “Melbourne Airport is proud to be the gateway to one of the world’s most multicultural cities. We welcome ALL passengers to Melbourne and expect everyone to be treated equally.”
