Canada’s T&T Supermarkets expands into the US with new store in San Jose

T&T Supermarkets, Canada’s leading Asian grocery chain, has announced some interesting news.

The Canadian T&T chain is expanding into the US, opening its first store in California at the Westgate Center in San Jose, with completion scheduled for fall 2025. The new 5,150-square-foot location will be located in the former Walmart space and will feature a number of unique offerings, including:

  • Grill counter
  • Noodle station
  • Dim Sum and Street Food Department
  • Hot food bar
  • Station for Chinese crepes on request
  • Bakery with Asian delicacies

The store will also introduce T&T’s signature private label products to California for the first time.

“We want to create a destination. It’s a place of discovery, innovation and bringing people together through food. We want to evolve our grocery store beyond functional – we want to be the place people want to go, not just have to go. We can’t wait to share this with the people of the Bay Area.”

The new store is expected to create around 200 jobs and enrich the Bay Area’s culinary landscape.

This development is a sign of T&T’s plans for further expansion in the US. T&T is currently planning two more openings in Washington State.

In other grocery news, Walmart reached a record 37% share of the U.S. online grocery market in the second quarter of 2024, significantly expanding its dominance while traditional supermarkets are declining. This growth is due to Walmart’s competitive pricing and efficient omnichannel strategy, which includes a focus on first-party delivery services to support Walmart+ and operational efficiencies. Walmart’s online grocery market share has increased 880 basis points since the start of 2022, while supermarkets have declined 700 basis points.

While Target holds a 7% share of the online grocery market, Walmart’s strong performance in both delivery and pickup services has led to a nearly 8 percentage point increase in its delivery market share. Walmart’s extensive store network enhances its curbside and in-store pickup capabilities, giving the company a significant advantage over its competitors. Despite Amazon’s advanced logistics, Walmart’s wide reach and focus on low prices continue to strengthen its position in the e-grocery sector.
