Many people insist that many candies need to be kept in the freezer, from Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups to Oreos. I also insist that Girl Scout Cookies should always be kept frozen. They just taste better that way. These treats are not meant to be kept in the freezer – experimental customers just decided that’s where they should be kept.

But there is a sweet treat that actually Is designed for storage in the freezer. It’s one you probably don’t expect: The Pop-Tart.

Should you freeze your Pop-Tarts?

If there’s anything that belongs in a toaster, it’s a Pop-Tart. They were literally invented to fit in a toaster and pop out in just a few minutes as a ready-made, delicious breakfast pastry. Warm, toasty deliciousness is what makes a Pop-Tart a Pop-Tart. Right?

Don’t be so sure. Not only do many fans of this treat prefer to enjoy them frozen, but Kellogg’s itself lists freezing Pop-Tarts as one of the recommended preparation methods.

Look on the side of a Pop-Tart package. In addition to instructions on how to toast or heat Pop-Tarts in the microwave, you’ll also find instructions on how to prepare them for frosted enjoyment. Information on the three recommended ways to eat Pop-Tarts can also be found on the Pop-Tarts website. The company’s recommendation is to place the Pop-Tarts in the freezer for 20 minutes before eating. This period of time will likely prevent the Pop-Tarts from becoming too hard to eat, but is just cold enough for the filling inside to become a little cool.

While 20 minutes is the ideal time for frozen Pop-Tarts, the biggest benefit of storing them in the freezer is that you don’t have to spend extra prep time if you’re rushing out of the house. While a toasted Pop-Tart is perfect, especially if you add a little butter, sometimes time isn’t available. Or maybe you’re just looking for a different way to enjoy the nostalgic treat. Whatever your reasons, freezing overnight could be the solution.

Which Pop-Tarts flavors taste best frozen?

The recommendation to freeze Pop-Tarts has always been on the package without most of us noticing. While this is confirmation that the treat can be eaten frozen, we still don’t have any guidelines from the manufacturer on which flavors are best to freeze. Looks like we’ll have to figure that out for ourselves.

However, fans of the treat on Reddit have offered some recommendations on which Pop-Tarts are best for keeping cold. For one user, the taste of s’mores is “heavenly” when frozen and eaten on a hot day. Others recommend the fruit flavors because they become “jammy and chewy” while toning down the “sugary sweetness” a bit.

A Pop-Tart is a Pop-Tart, and while I bet some flavors freeze better than others, the treat will still taste delicious. The only Pop-Tart I would say should not This extra-large version of the toaster pastry can be frozen. It would probably taste delicious frozen too, but you would need to find a freezer large enough to accommodate it.
