Caleb Williams keeps the receipts.

The Chicago Bears quarterback revealed Albert Breer of Sports illustrated that he seeks out criticism and even takes screenshots of it to motivate himself.

“The other part, and this goes into knowing myself, is that all athletes try to pretend they don’t see it. I see it and I use it,” Williams said. “I take screenshots of people. People don’t know. I have notes and things that I take screenshots of. I save the links, all that. I use it.”

Williams is far from the first athlete to use slights, real or imagined, as motivation. No one in the city of Chicago was more successful at it than Michael Jordan, and the Bears quarterback was another basketball star to do the same.

“There’s always something,” he said. “LeBron (James) always says and has said it before, he just needs one thing. He goes to the stadium, all he needs is a fan, one thing during the week or before the game. Part of it is motivation and part of it is motivating yourself. That’s the other part. It’s about knowing myself. It’s about knowing what I like to know, how I like to do things. I know how hard I work. I know my confidence that I have from the work I’ve been doing for many, many years now.”

If Saturday’s preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals was any indication, Williams is starting to find motivation.

He shone with his arms and legs and had a clear connection with his rookie colleague Rome Odunze during the victory:

The pressure is on for Williams to be the new quarterback savior for a franchise that has been looking for one for a long time. In fact, the Bears are the only NFL team that has never had a 4,000-yard passer in a season and have been known to rotate through several quarterbacks even during successful periods.

But this pressure also brings opportunities.

If Williams lives up to expectations, he can become a legend in a city hungry for sustained football success, and reaching that level takes a lot of internal and external motivation, especially over the course of a long career.

Good thing he probably has a lot of screenshots.
