MnDOT crews use remote-controlled lawn mower for Duluth’s hilly terrain

DULUTH, Minnesota (Northern News Now) – After recent rains, Minnesota Transportation Bureau (MnDOT) crews have been busy keeping the roads along our streets clean.

Drivers may have noticed some strange-looking technology that emergency crews use to ensure the safety of workers in hilly terrain.

Duluth introduced the gasoline-powered RC mower back in 2021.

The remote-controlled lawn mowers are used along highways and high hills to provide their drivers with a safer workplace.

Control is carried out by trained drivers who use a remote control equipped with a joystick and camera to steer the mower along its route.

Most lawn mowers or riding lawn mowers tend to be heavy and cause damage to the ground and grass.

The RC mower is lighter, which not only protects the lawn but is also safer for the people operating the machine.

Margie Nelson, MnDOT public affairs coordinator, says safety is the top priority with the mower.

“This allows us to mow and maintain the lawn and keep it in good condition without exposing our workers to the risk of tipping over,” Nelson said.

Compared to other types of lawn mowers, the RC mower is also said to leave a smaller carbon footprint due to its lower power consumption.
