SpaceX astronauts will perform first spacewalk far beyond the space station

SpaceX astronauts will perform first spacewalk far beyond the space station

Space X’s Polaris Dawn mission, which will take four astronauts three times farther from Earth than the International Space Station, is scheduled to launch Monday and will bring many firsts, including a commercial spacewalk in newly developed spacesuits.

The Polaris program is a test and development program for innovative technologies that will be used in space travel and will ultimately usher in a new era of commercial space exploration. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk often speaks of the goal of making humanity an “interplanetary species.”

A SpaceX Falcon 9 will launch the Polaris Dawn astronauts into space on Monday, the first mission of the Polaris program.

The mission will see astronauts test a next-generation spacesuit during their first commercial spacewalk.

The crew will also be taken to the highest altitude of any manned space mission since the Apollo program, allowing them to test a new communications system using Musk’s Starlink.

In addition, crew members will conduct nearly 40 important health research experiments while raising funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Additionally, one member will read the children’s book “Kisses from Space” in orbit.

“After more than two years of training, we are excited to embark on this mission,” said Jared Isaacman, Polaris Dawn mission commander. “We are incredibly grateful for this opportunity and for the thousands of SpaceX engineers who have contributed to this endeavor. We hope the results of our mission will accelerate SpaceX’s vision of creating life on multiple planets and support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and its efforts to improve global survival rates for childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Throughout our mission, we will seek to inspire humanity to look up and imagine what we can accomplish here on Earth and in the worlds beyond our own.”

Isaacman was the mission commander of Inspiration4, the world’s first all-civilian mission to space in 2021. The Pennsylvania native is an experienced pilot who holds several world aviation records, including two around-the-world speed flights.

Joining Isaac are retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Scott “Kidd” Poteet of New Hampshire, who is serving as mission pilot; mission specialist Sarah Gillis of Colorado; and mission specialist and medical officer Anna Menon of Houston.

Menon has written the children’s book “Kisses from Space,” which she will read to children from orbit.

Polaris Dawn EV Suit Review

The new state-of-the-art extravehicular activity (EVA) spacesuits used during the mission were unveiled in May and bridge the gap between style and functionality. Gone are the days of bulky, cumbersome spacesuits. The new EVA suit combines a sleek design with advanced functionality.

Popular culture often misleads us with oversimplified depictions of spacesuits. Unlike the “fishbowl” helmets and easy-to-wear jumpsuits seen in movies, real spacesuits are complex, human-like spacecraft. They are equipped with propulsion and life support systems, making them more like deep-sea diving gear than casual wear.

SpaceX’s current Intravehicular Activity (IVA) suits serve as emergency protection in the Dragon capsule, but they are not designed to withstand the rigors of spacewalking. The new EVA suit is a significant improvement, offering improved mobility, durability and protection from the harsh conditions of space.

The EVA suit maintains the sleek design of the IVA model but uses new materials and manufacturing techniques for improved performance. The suit is also scalable, ensuring a perfect fit for a variety of body types.

They feature rotating joints for better mobility, advanced seals and valves, a 3D printed helmet with glare-reducing visor and camera, and heat management textiles for extreme protection.
