Trinity Alps schools restrict phone use on governor’s advice

Trinity Alps Unified School District is following Governor Newsom’s advice to make progress in restricting phone use in schools.

On August 13, Newsom spoke to school leaders about growing concerns about phone use in schools.

He urged school districts to take immediate action, as excessive phone use among children has been linked to anxiety, depression and other mental health problems.

As Trinity Alps Unified School Districts begin school on Tuesday, out of concern for students’ education and mental health, cell phone use will be restricted during class and events on all school campuses.

“They can keep them in their pocket, they can keep them in their backpack, they can carry them with them so that parents can get to them immediately in any kind of emergency situation. That’s in our policy, students will have their cell phones with them. A violation would be if they take out their cell phones and click around on social media or text someone instead of paying attention in class,” said Superintendent Jaime Green.

The meeting will take place on Monday at 6 p.m. in the Trinity High School library and will provide parents and teachers with the opportunity to speak openly about the changes in the coming school year.
