A restaurant review by Chica & The Don

Enter the vibrant world of Chica and the DonFlatiron’s newest hotspot, bringing the heat and heart of Latin America straight to your table.

Behind this vibrant concept is Nick Semkiw, a veteran partner known for his work at Lower East Side rum bar Las’ Lap. Working with Chef Michelle Chan, who brings culinary expertise from The Aviary, The Lambs Club and The Clocktower, Semkiw has created a menu as dynamic as the cultures it represents. Together, they have created a menu that pays tribute to their Latin American roots and is inspired by the rich culinary traditions of Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Colombia, Argentina and Mexico.

Interiors feature bold, colorful accents and intricate patterns that evoke Latin America’s rich cultural diversity. Guests walk down a corridor lined with vintage postcards from cities across South America. Faux greenery inspired by the plants of the Southern Hemisphere hangs from the ceilings. Warm, earthy tones are contrasted by striking hues of crimson, turquoise, and floral-patterned wallpaper.

Start with the crispy Chicharronrefined with spiced vinegar, lime and a dash of Tajin, or immerse yourself in the Empanadas with Lomo Saltadopacked with flavorful ground beef, Yukon potatoes, tomatoes and sautéed onions. Ceviche with shrimp and red snapperpaired with a coconut, aji amarillo and mango citrus broth, offers a refreshing contrast, while the Fried Red Snapperserved in a rich coconut tomato sauce, adds depth and warmth.

For a breathtaking experience try the Roasted Chickenflambéed at the table, accompanied by annatto saffron oil and the house’s famous green sauce.

No Latin celebration is complete without a great drink in hand, and beverage director Elvis Rosario – previously of Bathtub Gin and FIFTY – delivers just that.

Sip on the Girla tropical delight, a blend of aged rum, coconut, homemade strawberry condensed milk puree and lemon, served in a Cantarito clay cup.

Or choose The Dona distinctive twist on the Old Fashioned, with scotch, mamajuana, tamarind, plantain (banana liqueur), aromatic bitters and cinnamon. Each drink is crafted to complement the spirited flavors of the menu, making Chica & The Don a destination where every bite and sip tells a story.

This modern cocktail lounge and restaurant is not just another addition to the city’s dining scene – it is a tribute to Latin American culture, flavors and flair.
