Bay Area startup launches automated kitchen for use in food trucks

A San Francisco Bay Area startup has just launched the first unmanned mobile robot kitchen that can prepare a complete meal en route to delivery.

It works like a factory machine, but upon closer inspection you can see that it is a fully automated mobile kitchen that prepares a hot meal within minutes.

“Right now we are waiting for the wok to preheat to the right temperature for the food,” said Charles Kim.

Kim is Chief Operating Officer of Shin Star Presents, which designed and developed the robotic elements of this futuristic kitchen on wheels.

A click through the app called Ohlso activates the fully automated network of so-called “auto-woks,” in which fresh ingredients prepared in an external kitchen in San Mateo are fried every day.

“The first is the Wagyu Kalbi, which is ribs in a sweet soy marinade with various vegetables,” said Kim.

Recent statistics from the National Restaurant Association show that the average turnover rate in the industry is about 75%. That means that on average, three out of four employees leave their jobs within a year.

Jay Shin is co-founder of Olhso Korean BBQ & Seafood, which uses robotic technology.

“As a restaurant group, we want to reduce the turnover rate while working more efficiently and consistently,” Shin said.

“Automaton addresses current challenges such as labor shortages and rising ingredient costs,” Kim said.

They believe that their company can create jobs even with a fully automated kitchen.

“It still requires people behind the scenes, including people maintaining our system and people in our kitchen preparing the ingredients,” Kim said.

“When it comes to harmonizing food and robotics, at the end of the day it has to be about the food, not the robotics,” Shin said.

The sizzling short rib slices come out steaming hot and are ready to be served at just the right time when the truck reaches its destination.
