Colorado Springs police impose curfew on Monday

COLORADO SPRINGS – According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), a curfew has been lifted and a suspect is in custody following an hours-long standoff.

According to Peak Alerts, police responded to a barricaded man near 2200 Woodburn Street.

According to police, residents of the Woodburn Street home called police around 11 a.m. Monday and said a man who identified himself as a previous tenant had returned to the home.

The man, identified as 37-year-old Juan Lopez, is said to have threatened the current tenants with a knife and said he wanted to take over the house.

According to police, all current residents were able to leave the house before Lopez barricaded himself inside.

CSPD said they obtained a search warrant for the home and an arrest warrant for Lopez at around 2:40 p.m. They said they searched the home at around 3:00 p.m.

Police say a chemical irritant was released three times in the room Lopez was in. They say he surrendered without incident and was taken into custody around 6:45 p.m.

Lopez is charged with first-degree burglary, attempted second-degree assault and aggravated menacing.

WHEN WILL YOU BE NOTIFIED?

Emergency alert systems often offer some customization for notification settings, giving you more options for customizing what’s important to you. Peak Alerts allow this, but by default often warn about emergencies related to natural or man-made disasters, hazardous materials incidents, missing persons, law enforcement actions affecting the public, and evacuation orders, to name a few.
