Colorado restaurant with the state’s best pizza closes after 42 years – 98.5 KYGO

I was born and raised in Greeley, Colorado, and one of my favorite places in my hometown was undoubtedly the small family-run restaurant Fat Albert’s with the best pies in the world. Unfortunately, the family will be closing the iconic restaurant after 42 years…

On March 1, 1982, the restaurant opened in the small south portion of a bank building on 23rd Avenue in Greeley. Although not an Irish pub, the restaurant was known for its love of St. Patrick’s Day and its annual celebration of the holiday in March.

Homemade menu items like the Monte Cristo and Rueben sandwich were popular, but the star of the show was always dessert, especially the pies…

Highlights include the cherry pie, chocolate cream pie, carrot cake, chocolate zucchini pie and the Peanut Butter Supreme Pie, the best-selling dish that has won the restaurant awards for years and even caught the attention of the popular television show “Dateline” and NBC News.

In a social media post, the restaurant thanked Greeley and Northern Colorado, saying in part, “It is time for us to say goodbye to Fat Albert’s Restaurant as we close our doors. For 42 years, Fat Albert’s was more than just a place to eat – it was a second home, a place where friends became family and where memories were made around tables filled with love, laughter and delicious food. It has been our great honor to be a part of your lives, from celebrating your special moments to simply smiling over a favorite dish. Our last day of operation is August 31st. We invite you to join us in these final days and share the memories, stories and meals that made Fat Albert’s so special.”
