You must play through the game until you reach the Snake Trail in Bamboo Grove. Go through this area and you will come to a mysterious figure who can upgrade your pumpkin, allowing you to use it to absorb spirits. The very first enemy you will encounter and who will likely drop it is the Wandering Wight, a tough enemy right at the start of the game. Should you defeat him early on, before you have the pumpkin upgrade, you can absorb any spirits you missed from the main menu in a shrine.

Finding and absorbing these enemies is easy as you will encounter them throughout the game. They are distinguished from normal enemies by having blue energy around them and they hit incredibly hard and can withstand much more damage than normal enemies. They are best thought of as a sort of mini-boss.

You’ll want to make sure you fully explore the game’s many areas, as some of them are off the beaten track in their own mini-arenas that you’ll need to try and find. Defeating these enemies will cause a glowing blue energy orb to appear, which you can interact with and grab the ghost for yourself.

How to equip a ghost

To equip a spirit, go to your inventory. There you will find the spirits in the last item slot above your armor. You can equip your spirit here and then use it in battle by pressing both triggers on the controller at the same time. It is important to remember that the spirits also give you an additional passive advantage when you equip them, such as better defense, attack, or other improved stats.

How to upgrade a spirit

Spirits can be upgraded, and each upgrade level provides a benefit. To do this, visit a shrine, select Self-Improvement, then Cultivate Spirits. You’ll need different resources depending on what level the spirit is at. You might need Will, Iron Bull Blood, or a Void Knot. Pay close attention to what each upgrade does.

Some of these reduce the energy required to use the spirit, while others can increase the damage it deals when used.

Which skill you use is entirely up to you, as they all have slightly different styles. I would suggest experimenting with them from fight to fight, as they all fit together slightly differently depending on the boss you’re fighting. My personal favorite is the Wandering Wight’s powerful headbutt attack.
