Prior to the start of the Junior Livestock Sale at the Southwest Washington Fair on Friday, August 16, the Junior Livestock Sale Committee announced the winner of this year’s Hay King Award.

“Every year we try to give out the Hay King Award, which is given to the best hay baler as judged by our panel of judges,” said Jason Humphrey, Junior Livestock Sale Committee member. “I think it’s because of history. It’s always been a male. But this year we have hay kings and our first hay queen, Kennedy Kinsman.”

Kinsman, of Onalaska, was also recently named to the Onalaska Middle School Honor Roll with a 4.0 grade point average in June.

The Southwest Washington Junior Livestock Sale offers area youth involved in 4-H clubs or their local Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapters the opportunity to select, raise, train, market, and ultimately sell an animal of their choice during an annual live auction at the Southwest Washington Fair.

Young people can choose between raising pigs, lambs, goats, ducks, geese, chickens, turkeys, rabbits and cattle.
