Where to eat, sleep and shop in chic Chalkida on the island of Evia

Chalkida is the sophisticated, elegant capital of Evia, Greece’s second largest island. Once a major power in ancient Greece and the Roman Empire, Evia is now a chic retreat from crowded Athens. It is connected to the mainland by a bridge and is therefore easily accessible by car in about an hour and a half.

Chalkida mesmerizes visitors with its rapidly changing sea currents, dubbed the “crazy water” phenomenon. The town is also dotted with remains of temples and relics, incongruously placed next to cafes, boutiques and local fish tavernas. If you have an eye for beauty, here’s how to enjoy a design-led stay.
