Charlotte’s Kitchen in Johnston is the best sandwich shop in Iowa, according to Yelp. The online review site called the local sandwich shop a “mini empire” for chicken sandwiches, noting that the chicken sandwich with crab rangoon, wonton chips and crab rangoon spread was a reviewer favorite.
The soul food shop was inspired by childhood memories of cooking with his grandmother, says owner Michael Hanstead on the website.

The original Charlotte’s Kitchen is located at 6150 Merle Hay Road in Johnston. The newest location is 102 N. Jefferson Way in Indianola.
Hanstead and Charlotte’s Kitchen began as a food truck that can still be found in the Des Moines metro area. You can also book the truck online for weddings, parties, neighborhood events and more.
The owners also plan to open a branch in Altoona soon.
