German airport group seeks date for meeting with climate activists

The German airport association ADV wants to start talks with the climate action group Last Generation after its activists targeted several German airports in a series of controversial protests in recent weeks.

“A meeting will take place shortly between representatives of Last Generation and the management of the airport association ADV,” the group announced on Tuesday.

With the talks, the ADV wanted to make it clear that airports were the wrong place for protests because they were pursuing an ambitious agenda for climate neutrality, the association said.

ADV offered to hold talks with Last Generation about two weeks ago.

The association’s goal is to inform climate activists about current climate policy and the measures that airports are implementing. They also want to discuss with them the effects of runway blockades on airport safety.

The climate activists reacted on Monday and accepted the offer of dialogue on the condition that the topic of discussion be made more concrete.

Flights were suspended at two airports after the band Last Generation staged protests at several German airports on Thursday, breaking through fences and gluing themselves to the runway.

The target of the actions were the airports in Berlin-Brandenburg, Stuttgart, Nuremberg and Cologne-Bonn.

Air traffic in Cologne-Bonn and Nuremberg was briefly interrupted.
