Big Sky builds a stunning glass roof over the valley station of the Lone Peak Tram

BIG SKY, Montana – Visitors to Big Sky Resort in Montana can look forward to a stunning new addition to the Lone Peak Tram when they hit the slopes next ski season: construction is currently underway on a large canopy made of 400 panes of glass that will cover the base station’s loading platform. The canopy will protect both the trams and guests, allowing for weather-protected boarding without losing the feeling of being outdoors.

“It will be a unique building. There will be nothing like it anywhere else.” – Patrick Doolin, Jackson Contractor Group and Project Manager

The structure itself is made up of primary and secondary steel beams that form triangular sections where the individual glass panels will be installed. The continuous triangular concept keeps the structure unique and free-form. In recent weeks, the pre-assembly of the triangles has been completed and the structure put together. Now the 400 glass panels are being installed to complete the project.

Each piece of glass is carefully shaped and placed to form a flowing, faceted surface that mimics the elegance of snowdrifts and ice crystals. The interplay of light, shadows and reflections on the glass panels evokes the dynamic and ever-changing nature of snow and ice. Just as snowflakes vary in shape and beauty, the perception of this structure also changes depending on the viewing angle and environmental conditions, making each view a unique visual experience.” – Big Sky Resort
