Residents are being invited to have their say on plans for a £65 million project to redevelop the area around a city centre train station.

Peterborough’s station district will be redeveloped and will have a new station entrance and a new route into the city centre for pedestrians and cyclists.

A poll on the proposed plan closes at 11:59am (BST) on 27 September.

Nick Thulbourn, Peterborough City Council’s cabinet member for growth and regeneration, said it would be a “significant change” for the people of the city.

“The feedback collected will play an important role in developing the final plans for the station district,” he said.

The proposals include the creation of a western entrance to the station with new stops and a parking garage.

The existing eastern station building would be renovated and transformed into a traffic-calmed station square.

“Dark underpasses”

The ten-minute walk from the train station to the city center was described in the planning documents as a “labyrinth of narrow sidewalks, dark underpasses and pedestrian bridges.”

An underpass at the Queensgate roundabout would be filled in and replaced by a ground-level pedestrian crossing.

To talk to people about the project, two pop-up events will take place, on 30 August in front of the Queensgate Shopping Centre and on 21 September at the Cathedral Arch in the city centre.

The project received £48 million from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund last year, with the remaining costs covered by the city council and Network Rail.

Robin Dobson, property director at Network Rail, said the plan was to make the station “fit for the future”.

He said: “The redevelopment also offers the opportunity to release land for a wide range of uses, including housing, thereby stimulating the city’s economic growth.”

The Council plans to present a full business case to the Government in early 2025.
