Indianapolis Airport reports record traffic in 2024

INDIANAPOLIS – The numbers are in, and the Indianapolis Airport Authority is reporting record-breaking passenger volume for the first half of 2024.

More than 5.2 million people reportedly traveled through Indianapolis International Airport from January to June.

“The data from the first and second quarters show that we are seeing 10 percent more passenger traffic than in 2023 and 2019,” said Mario Rodriguez, Managing Director of the IAA. “In fact, five of the ten busiest days in the airport’s history so far have been in 2024, and four of them in 2023.”

Earlier in the year, much of the traffic was due to the NBA All-Star Game in February and the busy travel season during spring break.

The airport reports that March 2024 was IND’s busiest month ever, with a total of 967,597 passengers.

May ushered in the summer travel season with a 12 percent increase in traffic compared to 2023. More than 967,360 passengers made it the second busiest month of all time. The busiest days were the days surrounding the Indianapolis 500.

However, the busiest month of all time is June with a total of 995,139 passengers. The numbers were boosted by Olympic hopefuls and swimming fans who came to the Olympic swimming trials.

The three busiest months ever at IND are currently June, March and May 2024.

“We are confident that Indy Airport will reach double digits this year and reach 10 million passengers overall,” Rodriguez said. “The real question is when that will happen.”

Indy Airport officials say they are preparing for another record-breaking fall holiday travel season and vacations as 2024 closes out.
