Woman fatally crushed on O’Hare Airport conveyor belt identified

A 57-year-old woman who died in a conveyor belt accident on Thursday has been identified, an official said on Friday.

Virginia Christine Vinton of Waxhaw, North Carolina, died in the incident, according to the Cook County coroner.

Vinton was last seen on camera at 2:27 a.m. entering a restricted area of the international terminal, Chicago police previously said.

Larry Langford, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department, said firefighters were called to the airport around 7:45 a.m. because a person was trapped in a machine transporting luggage. He said they found the woman in a baggage compartment caught in a conveyor belt system.

“She was trapped in the machine,” said Larry Merritt, another fire department spokesman. Vinton was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The luggage compartment was not open to the public, Langford said, and it was unclear how she got there.

Scott Allen, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Labor, said an Occupational Safety and Health Administration official visited the scene of the accident and learned that Vinton was not an airport employee.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
