Immigrants from New Jersey can learn about “Parole In Place” in free workshops

NEW JERSEY — There is a new path to citizenship in the U.S. for undocumented immigrants — “local parole.” Many New Jersey residents could be eligible, advocates say.

The Biden administration has launched a program that uses existing legal powers to provide more protection from deportation to some longtime U.S. residents married to U.S. citizens and to grant work authorization to others. It could also potentially provide a path to citizenship for some immigrants, according to Make the Road New Jersey.

“This program is the result of years of organizing efforts led by immigrant families,” the group said Tuesday. “Thousands of people in New Jersey could qualify.”

Make the Road New Jersey is hosting four workshops to educate the public about the new program. Staff advocates and organizers will be available to answer questions, determine eligibility and work with families to gather the necessary documentation to apply.

The schedule includes:

  • Wednesday, August 21 (6 p.m.) – 184 Passaic Street, Passaic
  • Wednesday, August 21 (7pm) – 42 Broad Street, Elizabeth
  • Thursday, August 22 (6:30 p.m.) – YWCA 357 New Brunswick Avenue, Perth Amboy
  • Thursday, September 5 (7pm) – 42 Broad Street, Elizabeth
