Missing scissors cause uproar at the airport

A missing pair of scissors caused chaos at a Japanese airport on Saturday morning – and at the same time earned praise for the airport’s response. The BBC reported that the scissors had disappeared from a shop near the gates at New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido that morning. While the search for the scissors was underway, security checks were suspended for two hours, while travelers who were already in the departure hall had to be checked again. Around 36 flights were canceled and another 201 were delayed.

And although Japan News reports that flights resumed two hours later, the scissors didn’t turn up until Sunday — at the same store where they were lost. “We recognize that this is due to inadequate storage and management systems at the store,” the airport operator said in a statement. “We are aware that this incident could also be linked to a hijacking or terrorism and will again work to thoroughly inform management.” The BBC notes that some posts on X praised the airport’s response, such as this one: “This incident has demonstrated the safety of Japanese aviation and the thoroughness of their manuals!” (More stories from Japan.)
