After delays, a federal food aid program is now set to start in Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KFVS) – The state Department of Social Services has announced the start of a new federal food assistance program in Missouri.

Missouri participated in the program last year to provide eligible families with $120 in food assistance to help offset nutritional deficiencies caused by the loss of school meals over the summer.

“Families whose children rely on school breakfast and lunch may struggle to access healthy meals during the summer,” said Kim Evans, director of family support. “The SuN Bucks program takes concrete steps to combat childhood hunger and help our children thrive and stay healthy throughout the summer.”

The system was plagued by administrative and technical problems that delayed the launch of the program in “Show Me” status.

Certain households are already eligible for benefits and do not need to apply for the program. These include students who are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch during the school year,

Children in households already participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or temporary assistance, as well as students who live in foster care, are homeless, or are migrants.

Families who do not fall into one of the above categories must apply for the program online by August 31.

Benefits expire 122 days after payment, even if they are not used.
