COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — A Colorado Springs Utilities spokesman said this is the first time in 20 years he has observed a fire breakout under such circumstances.

Just after 5:30 p.m. Monday, Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to a gas line fire in the 4000 block of Shelley Ave in east Colorado Springs near the airport. Fire department reported that lightning struck a gas line and caused a fire.

According to CSFD, there were no injuries and the fire did not spread, but did char some bark from a nearby tree.

According to CSU, homeowners don’t need to worry, this type of fire is extremely rare. The energy company added that repairing the damaged line is relatively simple. Either CSU or CSFD will turn off the gas to put out the fire, then the damaged part of the line will be replaced and the line capped.

KRDO 13 investigates tried to speak to the homeowners but found that the property was unoccupied.
