Suspect smashes window at Detroit pawn shop during attempted robbery

Surveillance footage shows a suspect armed with a hammer smashing a display case containing expensive goods at iPawn Detroit, a pawn shop on the city’s west side.

“Oh! It’s just a normal day at the pawn shop,” said Michael Yousif, who runs the store. “It happens in our business… It is what it is. It’s part of the business.”

The exhibit that was attacked is part of an implemented high-end security program.

“I had Rolex watches in there and Cartier glasses. It was very, very expensive stuff. The display case served its purpose,” Yousif said. “It’s one-inch-thick bulletproof glass. It doesn’t break easily. They tried almost 20 times before they finally broke through it, and they still didn’t quite make it – they only got a few inches out to pull it through.”

An outside camera shows two suspects approaching the store. They apparently have a plan, but it doesn’t quite work out.

Yousif said they did not get away with it, but he described the attempted theft as a reminder of the hard times many people live in today.

“Burglaries – you see them on the news every other day and that’s the sad thing about what’s coming to the country,” Yousif said. “If the economy weakens, crime will skyrocket. That’s what’s going to happen.”

Anyone who recognizes the suspects is asked to contact Detroit Police.
