Keith’s Blog: Should I rent a Porsche Macan?

Keith’s Blog: Should I rent a Porsche Macan?

It is a tradition to have one or two SCM cars on the local Porsche Club’s Northwest Passage tour.

The entry list of 40 cars consists mainly of Porsche’s newer models, but I drove our Lotus Elise on the tour and one year we entered a trio of Alfa Romeos with our GTV, Duetto and Giulia Super.

Last year we took the 1971 Jaguar E-Type V12 Coupé and the 1975 Porsche 911S.

These are all sports cars. However, with the thrill of a classic car comes the fear of mechanical breakdowns and a complete lack of comfort.

As we were looking at next year’s event, SCM senior editor Rory Jurnecka suggested I rent a Porsche Macan from car-sharing company Turo. When I checked the website, there were three available, priced at a reasonable $95 to $150 per day, plus some additional fees and mileage.

The Macan would offer me space in the back for my electric car, but still seems to be the “right size” compared to a Cayenne or Panamera.

Since the tour is a six-day event, the cost of car rental ranges from $750 to $2,000.

That’s probably less than any repair to the Jaguar would cost. And I would be in a modern Porsche and no longer the outsider in an “old classic car.”

I’m afraid I would lose the whole classic car experience, which is a big reason I attend this event.

Would driving a Macan reduce 1,000 miles of scenic highway to a streaming video of rolling hills, viewed through rolled-up windows, following navigation instructions with the air conditioning on, and listening to our Spotify road trip playlist?

What would you do? Would you drive your classic car or rent a new Porsche for the tour? Do you have any experiences with Turo that you would like to tell me about? Let me know what you think.
