The smell of grilled carne asada and pork from street vendor Taco Locos Estilo Oaxaca in Apple Valley was in the air Sunday night.

Nearly two dozen customers lined up to purchase tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tortas, mulitas, alambre and papa asada at Tacos Locos, near the AutoZone on the corner of Kiowa and Bear Valley Road.

“I love tacos, and these are the best I’ve ever had,” said Scott Murphy, a regular customer at Taco Locos. “The meat is so tender and flavorful.”

Under a nearly full moon, Murphy ordered six tacos al pastor and two carne asada burritos for himself and his wife, Brenda.

“The Oaxacan-style soft tacos are the best,” said customer Carlos Pena of Apple Valley. “The tacos contain marinated asada and I order extra onions, cilantro, jalapeno, salsa and lime juice.”

Under a portable tent, Michael Pelasco was part of a busy sales team that greeted customers, grilled and chopped meat, operated the grill area, prepared menu items and assembled orders.

Sheila Norton recounted how “absolutely fascinating” it was to watch the “succulent pork” being cut from the burning skewer and placed on the grill or in a corn tortilla for a taco.

Customers told the Daily Press that the skewered piece of marinated pork used in tacos al pastor (which translates to “shepherd-style tacos”) is a street stunner.

“We’re from Los Angeles and based in various locations in Southern California,” Pelasco said. “We’re here in Apple Valley on weekends from 6 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.”

Pelasco said his team began setting up shop in Apple Valley after visiting relatives in town. The Tacos Locos team worked in wind, rain and cold.

“We are always there for our customers,” Pelasco said. “We value them all.”
