An escaped Mississippi prisoner remained barricaded in a Chicago restaurant Wednesday morning as the standoff between the man and the U.S. Marshals Office dragged into the 14th hour.

As of 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, Joshua Zimmerman, who left a district court in DeSoto, Mississippi, on June 14, was still barricaded alone inside a seafood restaurant in the 2300 block of W. Madison, officials said. The scene remains active and there is a heavy police presence.

The restaurant is just a few blocks from the heavily secured United Center, where the third day of the Democratic National Convention is taking place.

According to the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office, Zimmerman had been in the DeSoto County Jail in Mississippi since September 2023, where he was charged with attempted auto theft and murder. Zimmerman was also charged with murder in Houston, Texas, police said.

On June 14, Zimmerman was at a DeSoto County courthouse for a hearing when he left the building, crossed the street to a gas station and convinced a man there to give him a ride to Memphis, a sheriff’s office news release said. The news release also said Zimmerman had no accomplice in his escape and left the courthouse in his pajamas.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Police Chief Justin Smith said he did not know how Zimmerman got to Chicago.

Smith said the office looks forward to returning Zimmerman, whom the U.S. Marshals Office has described as “armed and very dangerous,” to his prison to “gather the remaining facts regarding his escape.”

According to Chicago police, SWAT officers have been on the scene since Wednesday morning. No further information was released.
