The Denim Coffee Company opens a second cafe in Harrisburg.

The Chambersburg-based specialty roaster has signed a lease with Harristown Enterprises to open a 2,500-square-foot store at 17 S. Second St. It will open later this year on the ground floor of the Menaker apartment complex.

“This will be a great location for Denim in downtown Harrisburg’s Market Square with access to a growing residential population and customers from downtown hotels and the growing UPMC Harrisburg campus,” said Brad Jones, Harristown president and CEO, in a press release.

Harristown has completed the conversion of the Menaker office building into an apartment building in 2022. The building will house 28 one and two bedroom apartments.

Built in 1906 by the Johnston Paper Company, the building housed the paper wholesaler’s headquarters as well as a business school, a gift shop, an office furniture dealer, and state and county offices.

Denim started as a coffee roaster in 2011 and has stores in Harrisburg, Chambersburg, Mechanicsburg, Dickinson College and Carlisle, with a store opening in Lancaster City this summer.

Denim’s menus are straightforward and include filter and pour-over coffee and espresso drinks, including macchiato, cappuccino, latte and mocha.

Earlier this year, Denim’s co-owner Matt Ramsay said they wanted to open at least 10 stores where they could buy coffee beans directly from farmers. Ultimately, Ramsay said, the model would cut out the middleman and ultimately give farmers a fairer price when they sell.

Denim’s first store in Harrisburg, a small space with counter seating, opened in 2021 on the corner of Walnut and Fourth Streets.

Ramsay said the Menaker location will offer an additional amenity: a meeting room with the brand’s standard espresso and breakfast sandwich menus.

Harristown purchased the building in 2018 for $1.8 million from the law firm Skarlatos and Zonarich.
