German police have arrested a 54-year-old suspect who is believed to be the gunman in the fatal shooting on a platform at Frankfurt’s busy main station on Tuesday evening.

The victim, a 27-year-old man, was standing on platform 9 of the station at around 9 p.m. (19:00 GMT) on Tuesday when a gunman approached him from behind and fired several shots with a pistol, police said.

The victim died at the scene. The suspected shooter tried to flee, but was caught by police shortly afterwards on a nearby platform.

During the search of the station, which was closed to all train traffic for around 25 minutes due to the police operation on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, a pistol was discovered, which was presumably the firearm.

Prosecutors in Frankfurt announced on Wednesday that both the suspect and the victim were Turkish citizens. A possible motive for the shooting is still unclear, and authorities said the investigation is ongoing.

The 54-year-old suspected shooter is scheduled to appear before a judge on Wednesday, who will decide whether the man should remain in custody while police continue to investigate the shooting.

On Wednesday, travelers flocked to the station again and there were hardly any traces left of the fatal shooting a few hours earlier.

“It’s really shocking that something like this happens in the middle of the train station,” a student from Frankfurt who was on her way to Munich told the dpa. The area around Frankfurt’s main train station has long been notorious for its run-down atmosphere.

“The station has gotten worse,” a man who said he has worked at a bakery near platform 9 for over 20 years told the dpa.
