New Japanese sandwiches in the Mission

A new breakfast spot is opening in Noe Valley, a long-standing French bistro is closing in Russian Hill, and a new Japanese sandwich place is opening in the Mission—all in this week’s food news.

A new breakfast and lunch spot opens in Noe Valley. Taffisas SFist first reported. The company is moving into the premises that until a few days ago were occupied by the original location of the local mini-diner chain. toast (1748 Church Street), which still has locations on Polk Street and in West Portal. Toast’s owners posted a notice of the closure and a thank you to the neighborhood on the front door earlier this week, and now Taffi’s has posted a “Coming Soon” sign. This has been Toast’s home for the past 18 years.

Cocotte (1521 Hyde Street), the French bistro in Russian Hill that replaced the Hyde Street Bistro for the past decade, has closed. As the Chronicle reports, the restaurant was closed earlier this year for earthquake renovations and may never reopen. And now the owner of the Mission’s Thanh Tam II, Johnny Le, is reportedly opening a new Vietnamese restaurant in the space.

In case you missed it, the new Michelin stars were released on Monday and the headlines read: Sons and daughters was raised to two stars, and three other restaurants in San Francisco received stars for the first time: 7 Adams, OvenAnd Hilda and JesseMeanwhile, 25-year-old fine-dining restaurant Gary Danko in Fisherman’s Wharf lost its star after holding one since the first Michelin Guide for the Bay Area was published 17 years ago.

As Tablehopper reports, there is a new Japanese sandwich shop called Tadima which just opened in the Mission (3515 20th Street). It serves a variety of sandwiches as well as nigiri and matcha, hojicha and coffee drinks.

Tablehopper also reports on the opening of The functionthe city’s first black comedy club, which opened last weekend at 1414 Market Street. We first reported on the bar and comedy club, which moved into the former dive bar The Hot Spot, in February. It’s the project of comedian Stroy Moyd, who has organized the Hella Funny comedy shows in SF and Oakland for many years. It’s now open seven nights a week.

Up in Napa, Stateline Road Smokehouse just opened Thursday, Eater reports. The new Kansas City-inspired barbecue joint from chef Darryl Bell Jr. — a former chef at Press in St. Helena and a graduate of Bouchon — is located in a former auto repair shop in Napa’s Rail Arts District, it reported last month.
