Sheetz, the regional, family-owned supermarket and gas station chain, announced Wednesday that it will open its first Michigan store in Romulus next Tuesday, a few days earlier than originally announced.

The Pennsylvania-based 24-hour retailer with a family name that—at first—induces giggles because it sounds a little obscene is rapidly expanding into Michigan, broadening its geographic footprint.

The company said it will open the store at 33380 Wick Road at 8 a.m. and hold a grand opening celebration from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. It will be the first of 50 to 60 locations in the Detroit metropolitan area over the next five to six years, the company said.

Sheetz had originally announced that the store would open in September.

Earlier this month, the company announced that in addition to that store in Romulus, it would build another on Middlebelt Road, two in Taylor, at Telegraph and Eureka roads, one in Chesterfield on 23 Mile, one in Warren on Van Dyke and one in Macomb on Garfield Road.

In February, company CEO Travis Sheetz visited the site and told Michigan residents his reasons for shopping at his family’s business. The business has grown from just one store in 1952 to over 700 locations, with more opening all the time.

Sheetz, who has become familiar with the idiosyncrasies of Michigan drivers, such as the “Michigan Left,” believes metro Detroit residents would like the retail concept once they try it out. But he said that, like the new things in the state he’s experienced, it might be hard to understand what it’s like until you visit one of these stores.
