70 years ago

20 August 1954

August 31st marked the end of letters postmarked from Trail Creek, Montana. The post office on the border with Canada was closed. It had been open for 50 years. Today the border crossing is also closed.

60 years ago

21 August 1964

The Lost and Found office in Glacier National Park turned up some interesting items. In one bag was a pair of glass eyes, one more bloodshot than the other. They both appeared to belong to the same man. Also turned in was a set of false dentures that a person had found at Baring Creek Falls.

50 years ago

23 August 1974

Doug Chadwick was assigned to monitor the goat population in Glacier National Park from Sperry Glacier north to Ahern Pass. The park estimated at the time that there were 600 to 900 mountain goats in the park. Chadwick went on to become quite a famous author and writer for National Geographic.

40 years ago

23 August 1984

The photo and story on the front page showed the wedding photo of Paul Grilley and Patti Davis. Patti was the daughter of President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy. They were also in the photo. Terry and Donna Grilley, Paul’s parents, were also in the photo.

30 years ago

25 August 1994

The Starvation Creek Fire had reached Canada. The fire started in Glacier National Park near the border. It was 2,200 acres in size and had blocked access to Kintla Lake.

20 years ago

19 August 2004

A sculpture of an iron eagle, perched on an arch on Paul DeToni’s property on Highway 2 just before the western entrance to Glacier National Park, caused a stir. The huge iron eagle blocked part of the view of the park at the time. It was eventually moved to Libby.

The federal government withdrew a proposal to list the wolverine under the Endangered Species Act. At the time, it was claimed that the population was growing. Today, the wolverine is protected as an endangered species under the law.
