SHOPPERS have one less place to buy their groceries and everyday necessities.
Save-A-Lot is closing another of its stores, this time in Lancaster, New York, to the dismay of residents and employees.

Save-A-Lot’s Lancaster store at 10 Aurora Street will permanently close on Saturday, September 7.
The chain announced the closure on its local store’s Facebook page.
“We regret to announce that we will be closing permanently on Saturday, September 7th,” the store wrote.
“We appreciate the support the people of Lancaster have given us for 22 years and we will miss being part of this community.”

The Lancaster branch also thanked its “dedicated employees” for their service, but did not mention whether their jobs would be terminated or they would be transferred to nearby branches.
“We would also like to thank our dedicated staff for their hard work in serving the community for so many years,” the post continued.
The Lancaster store also encouraged customers to visit a “nearby” location.
“Please visit our nearest location at the corner of French and Union in West Seneca,” the post continued.
The chain’s West Seneca location is about seven miles southwest of its Lancaster store.
Some residents are particularly concerned about the closure, fearing it will most impact their immediate neighbors.
The Lancaster Save-A-Lot is located directly across from Lancaster Towers, a senior living community.
Many residents in the community do not drive or do not have access to a car, making Save-A-Lot a convenient place to shop.
“It was disturbing because my mother used to live in the towers; she passed away, but she always took her little cart and came here,” shopper and Lancaster resident Kim Zanghi told CBS affiliate WIVB-TV.
“I’m thinking more about the elderly people in Lancaster Towers than any of us who have a car. But the nearest town is Tops and that’s a long walk for some of those people.”

- Dollar Tree bosses have announced that 600 Family Dollar stores will close this year. But that’s not all: Another 370 stores are set to close.
- In addition, around 30 Dollar Tree stores will be closed.
- Best Buy executives confirmed that 24 stores will be closed in the company’s 2024 fiscal year.
- The future of 99CentsOnly stores is uncertain after the discount chain filed for bankruptcy. More than 350 stores could have to close.
- Shop ‘n Save also announced that it will close a store in Pittsburgh on May 13 and replace it with Aldi.
Tops Friendly Markets is about a mile from the closed Save-A-Lot.
However, shoppers agree that shopping at Save-A-Lot was not only more convenient, but also more affordable.
“Going here is so much cheaper than going to Tops or anywhere else, it’s really devastating to the community,” said shopper Stephanie Fisher.
Mark Goulding, another shopper, said it would be “extremely damaging” to the city to close a budget grocery store.
“These people can save a lot despite their limited income,” Goulding said.
“I just think they should keep it open. I really do,” he added.
This is not the first lockdown to hit the Lancaster area.
Lancaster, a city in Erie County, New York, is located about 14 miles east of downtown Buffalo.
Earlier this summer, Save-A-Lot announced that it would close one of its stores in Buffalo.
Save-A-Lot also closed several locations earlier this year, including branches in Ohio and stores in Illinois.
The business, which once had over 900 branches, has had a tough year.

Various apps and services allow shoppers to save time by having someone else do the grocery shopping for them.
Instacart: Works with major retailers including Albertsons, ALDI, Costco, CVS, Kroger, Sam’s Club and Wegmans. Grocery deliveries can be made within an hour and can be arranged around your schedule, but prices may vary from in-store. There is a membership fee of $99 per year or $9.99 per month.
AmazonFresh: This is an offshoot of Amazon. It offers customers fresh groceries and household goods. The service works similarly to Instacart and offers same-day delivery and exclusive deals for Amazon Prime members.
Walmart Grocery: Walmart customers can place orders through the Walmart app and either pick them up or have them delivered to their home. The retailer calls it “the easiest way to shop.”
Shipped: Membership costs $99 per year and includes unlimited free deliveries on orders over $35. Customers can speak directly with their assigned Shipt shoppers to make special requests. The company also works closely with Target.
Kroger Delivery: Kroger customers can have their groceries delivered to their doorsteps at a time that suits them. Customers also have the option to redeem digital coupons so they don’t miss out on important deals. However, the retailer’s service does not offer same-day delivery.
Same day delivery: Orders can arrive within hours of being placed. Shoppers can receive real-time updates on their orders so last-minute changes and special requests can be accommodated. Target says there are “no delivery surcharges” and Target Circle offers are included. Shoppers can pay per delivery or become a Target Circle 360 member to receive unlimited deliveries.
CLOSING TIME
And it is not the only retailer that has closed several stores in recent weeks.
From car dealerships to fast-casual restaurant chains, businesses are closing across the country.
Macy’s is the latest retailer to face the closure of 150 stores due to falling sales; cafes and furniture stores are following suit.
From major retail chains like Big Lots to convenience stores like 7-Eleven, no business, large or small, seems to be immune from closure.
