E-commerce spending rises around Amazon’s Prime Day at Target, Walmart and others | Insights

The problem

Before Amazon’s Prime Day, copycat sales events from major retailers are held, helping many digital stores thrive. Walmart and Target are among the top brands capitalizing on these early sales events, while Temu and TikTok have also expanded with concurrent events.

Prior to Prime Day (July 16-17), Target hosted Target Deal Days (June 20-22) and Target Circle Week (July 7-13), while Walmart hosted its Walmart+ Week (June 17-23) and Walmart Deals Sale (July 8-11). U.S. consumer sales for both companies increased 5% year over year for the week ending June 23 and 3% for the week ending July 14.

On Amazon Prime Day 2024 alone, US consumer sales increased 6% compared to the 2023 event.

This year, Prime Day boosted online sales for all U.S. retailers Increase of 11% compared to these two dates in 2023. Adobe estimates that US consumers spent $14.2 billion during those 48 hours.

Other copycat techniques are also proving valuable for established brands. Gap – which is expected to see e-commerce growth in fiscal 2025, its first growth in four years – and TikTok are improving their revenue prospects by copying Shein Group Ltd.’s sales surge.
