FREEHOLD, NJ — A Wall Township man has been indicted by a Monmouth County grand jury on charges including first-degree murder in connection with the gruesome machete attack that left his ex-girlfriend dead, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Alex J. Williams, 25, is accused of fatally assaulting Brianna Greenwood, 29, in the parking lot of the Glen Oaks Apartment Complex near Aspen Circle on May 23, 2024. The indictment also includes allegations of endangering the welfare of a child because Greenwood’s 3-year-old child was nearby during the violent attack.

According to the Monmouth County District Attorney’s Office, Wall Township police arrived at the scene at about 9:22 a.m. and found Greenwood with serious injuries, including facial lacerations and a left arm that was almost completely severed. Despite attempts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries.

An investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau and Wall Township Police determined that Williams used a machete in the attack. He was arrested without incident and remains incarcerated at the Monmouth County Correctional Facility following a successful motion by the state to detain him.

The grand jury indictment includes one count of premeditated murder, two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, one count of third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and one count of fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.
