49ers release TE Logan Thomas, place DL Austin Bryant on IR

Logan Thomas arrived in San Francisco as a fascinating George Kittle Backup option, but the experienced pass catcher proved unsuitable. The 49ers released the new signing on Friday.

San Francisco, which agreed to a contract with the punter Pressley Harvin Defensive Lineman also placed this morning Austin Bryant on the injured list. Bryant entered his second season with the 49ers. Bryant sustained an injury this week, tweets Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com.

This news comes after Thomas missed some time with a hamstring injury. The former quarterback was out early during training camp. The 49ers lost the former Kittle backup Charlie Woerner this offseason and saw the Lions Brock Wright RFA offer sheet. Thomas may find a job elsewhere, but he is now entering his 33rd season.

Thomas signed a vet-minimum contract in June but is expected to be released by a second team this year. The Commanders, who extended their starting TE in 2021, released the 6-foot-6 gun earlier this offseason. Thomas’ performance so far, as inconsistent as it has been, could earn him another chance once he’s healthy again. The former Cardinals sixth-round quarterback pick turned tight end midway through his career and earned a three-year, $24.1 million extension from Washington for his performance.

A torn ACL sidelined Thomas after his breakthrough in 2020 (72 receptions, 672 yards, six touchdowns), and in the following two seasons he did not exceed 350 yards. In Eric Bieniemy’s offense last year Terry McLaurin The complementary target struck back, rushing for 496 yards and four touchdowns. Certainly not overly impressive numbers for a team’s best tight end, but Pro Football Focus ranked the QB-converted 17th among TEs in run blocking. The 49ers would have liked that, but they give up early.
