Professor for Architecture and Adaptive Reuse Wanted – Announcements

Professor of Architecture and Adaptive Reuse: The Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich invites applications for the above-mentioned position. The professorship is located at the Institute of Design and Architecture IEA.

The new professor will be primarily responsible for teaching in a design studio and will give lectures to students in the Bachelor and/or Master degree program in Architecture (including Master thesis), imparting theoretical foundations, methodological skills and expertise in the field of adaptive reuse. He/she should emphasize one of the following areas: i) Structure and Construction with a focus on the role of construction and structural transformation in adaptive reuse, including the potential of future changes in newly built structures and the exploration of digital tools and processes. ii) Urban Typologies with a focus on the impact of societal change and urban transformation on adaptive reuse, including the potential of existing buildings for the development of new spatial configurations and urban typologies. Contemporary digital design and production techniques are generally an integral part of the sustainable architecture debate.

The new professor is expected to propose and develop a cutting-edge research program. The focus is on the investigation and development of relevant topics that contribute to the further development of architecture as a discipline, in the mutual interaction of theory and practice. He/she will collaborate with professors in the Department of Architecture and various ETH departments. Of particular importance is the collaboration with the existing chairs at the Institute of Design and Architecture.

The successful candidate must have an extensive built body of work and competency in the design and realization of high-quality buildings with a strong focus on adaptive reuse. His/her qualifications include a university degree, architectural accreditation and, as a rule, experience in both research and teaching. Competence in leading a group and a contribution to the development of the Department of Architecture beyond the boundaries of the discipline are expected. At ETH Zurich, courses are usually held in German or English.
