Iconic 70-year-old Newington diner for sale: Real estate listing

NEWINGTON, CT — The Olympia Diner, an iconic 70-year-old restaurant in Newington where scenes from Hollywood movies and other media have been filmed, was recently put up for sale.

A real estate advertisement indicates that the restaurant at 3413 Berlin Turnpike, corner of Pane Road, is for sale or leasehold.

The property consists of one acre of commercial land and is located “within the toll road’s most desirable corridor,” the listing states.

The property also offers a “drive-thru opportunity” in a high visibility, high traffic area. According to the listing, multiple uses are also envisioned, including auto repair shop, bank, fast food, restaurant and supermarket.

Produced by the famous Jerry O’Mahony Diner Company of New Jersey, the Olympia originally opened in Massachusetts but was brought to Newington in 1954.

Billed as the “longest stainless steel diner in the country,” it has been owned by three families throughout its history: the Kritikos, Goulias, and Gavrilis families, with the latter owning the “OD” since 1974, according to the diner’s website.

In addition to commercials and public service announcements, the diner has also been used in scenes from films such as “Jacknife” (1989) with Robert DeNiro, “Promises in the Dark” (1979) with Marsha Mason and “Once More With Feeling” (2009) with Chazz Palminteri.
