The map of Storm Lillian shows where weather warnings apply in the UK

The Met Office has announced a newly named storm ahead of the holiday weekend, bringing heavy rain and strong winds.

Storm Lilian could bring gusts of up to 80 miles per hour to northern parts of the country as millions of people plan their holidays for the long weekend.

The meteorologist has issued two new yellow weather warnings for rain in south-west Scotland and the Aberdeenshire coast from 9pm Thursday to 9am Friday. A yellow wind warning is also in place for northern England and north Wales from 5am Friday to 11am Friday. The storm is expected to bring gusts of 50-60mph in the region.

On Thursday morning, two yellow wind warnings were already in effect for North Wales and Northern England, including Cumbria and Northumberland.

Lilian is the fifth named storm this year and the first since April.

Jason Kelly, chief meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Storm Lilian will bring some potentially damaging gusts on Friday morning, with speeds widely in the 50-60mph range, with gusts possibly reaching over 75mph in some places.”

“Rainfall is associated with Lilian, which has also prompted a Met Office warning for parts of Scotland. Within the warning area, a further 50mm of rain is possible over higher ground, with 20-30mm falling across much of the country. Much of this will fall on saturated ground, increasing the likelihood of surface water flooding.”

Lilian will move into the North Sea on Friday morning, bringing mostly easing winds and isolated showers, but further rain is expected in southern England by the end of the day.
