Southern state closed due to fatal accident; motorcyclist killed in Miller Place

At least two people have died in two separate traffic accidents in Suffolk County over the past 12 hours. One of them led to the closure of the Southern State Parkway near Exit 42 early Thursday morning, police said.

The eastbound lanes of Southern State remain closed near Bay Shore after a wrong-way crash killed at least one person, New York State Police said.

The westbound lanes were open at 7:30 a.m.

Police were unable to provide exact times or further details about the accident; the investigation is ongoing.

It was the second fatal accident in Suffolk in less than 12 hours.

At 9:55 p.m. Wednesday, a man riding a Suzuki GSX-R600 motorcycle was traveling westbound on Route 25A in Miller Place when he collided with an eastbound 2017 Toyota Prius as it turned left onto Oakland Avenue, Suffolk police said.

The motorcyclist, whose identity was not released by police, was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical assistant at the Suffolk Coroner’s Office, police said.

The driver of the Toyota was not injured.

The Suzuki and Toyota were impounded for safety inspection. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the Fourth Squad at 631-854-8652.
