Farmington Hills, MI – The City of Farmington Hills has received an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) in excess of $140,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy. This grant will support the City’s ongoing efforts to improve energy efficiency and conservation by funding the installation of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting at Fire Station #4, located at 28711 Drake Road. The introduction of LED lighting brings numerous benefits, including lower energy consumption, improved light quality, longer life of lighting fixtures, lower operating costs and fewer greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation.

“We are grateful to the Department of Energy for this grant, which will help the City meet its energy efficiency goals,” said City Manager Gary Mekjian. “This funding will enable needed upgrades to City facilities while allowing resources to be reallocated to other important uses. This ultimately benefits taxpayers and supports the City’s commitment to sustainability.”

This project is consistent with the City’s broader goals, which include a 10 percent reduction in energy use in municipal buildings by 2027 and a 20 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2020 to 2050. The City’s Capital Improvement Plan and Facility Condition Assessment have played a critical role in identifying and prioritizing projects that align with the City’s energy efficiency and sustainability goals.

The City was notified of eligibility by the Department of Energy and submitted the necessary application to secure funds. The next step in the process is to solicit bids within the year to ensure the Fire Station No. 4 retrofit is completed efficiently and effectively. Administration of the grant will be overseen by the City’s Office of Community Development, part of the Department of Planning and Community Development.
