Man allegedly shot victim at Walmart in Northland after altercation

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – A man is accused of shooting another man outside a Northland Walmart Wednesday afternoon, the Platte County district attorney announced.

Taquiza V. Johnson, 47, is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the killing of 71-year-old Ronald Barnett.

The shooting occurred around 4:20 a.m. in the parking lot of the store at 8551 N. Boardwalk Avenue.

Officers arrived at the scene and found Barnett suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital and later died.

According to court documents, investigators reviewed surveillance videos that showed the violence unfolding.

Johnson was caught buying beer in the store.

He later left the store and walked across a crosswalk when Barnett approached in a vehicle.

According to a video analyzed by investigators, Johnson walked toward Barnett’s vehicle and raised his arms.

After Johnson raised his arms, Barnett backed up, got out of his vehicle, then got back in and parked.

According to court documents, Johnson’s vehicle is later seen approaching the area where Barnett was parked and stopping.

Johnson then got out of his Jeep and walked behind him as Barnett walked toward him.

A video shows Johnson shooting Barnett.

Johnson was arrested a short time later in an apartment where he was changing clothes.
