BERLIN, Alabama. – The Berlin City Council on Monday reviewed its proposed 2025 budget, which includes $500,000 for the parks and recreation project and nearly $300,000 for city road work. The budget includes $600,000 carried over from the general fund for fiscal year 2024 and $310,050.50 in estimated revenues for next year. One estimate puts the city at a surplus of $191,550 at the end of fiscal year 2025.
The Berlin Road Fund, which is separate from the General Fund, expects revenues of $302,000 and expenses of $295,000, of which $250,000 is earmarked for repaving.
After discussing the park and recreation project, for which $500,000 is available from the proposed capital fund, the council decided to focus on developing a building for a farmers market, parking lot and playground in the coming year. Proposals to build a permanent restroom building were put on hold due to the estimated high cost of construction.
The Council may vote on the draft budget at its September meeting.
The Council also voted as follows:
- Adopt a transportation plan under the Rebuild Alabama Act for work on Mt. Carmel Drive
- Create an addendum to the farmers market regulations that would exempt vendors who sell at least 50% home-grown produce from having to obtain a business license and require those who sell food that is not at least 50% home-grown to comply with health department regulations.
- Donate $5,000 to the Berlin Volunteer Fire Department for new radios
- Donate $475 to the North Alabama Agriplex
The Berlin City Council meets every third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in Berlin City Hall. The public is invited to attend.
