You’ve probably heard the term “forever chemicals” before. It refers to PFAS, short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, notoriously toxic chemicals that hide in everyday household items like your cooking appliances. And as much as we wish grilling season lasted forever, we don’t want PFAS from our gas grills polluting the environment without breaking down—or seeping into our corn on the cob and veggie burgers! So we set out to find gas grills without PFAS. Then we narrowed down the (many) candidates to our six favorite models.

The 6 best PFAS-free gas grills

Currently, the EPA only regulates PFAS in drinking water, so safety standards on gas grills are really determined by the manufacturer. You can choose between propane and natural gas, which have their pros and cons (more on that below), or you can opt for a dual-gas model. We’ve also found some scaled-down options in case a full-size gas grill doesn’t fit your lifestyle. But most importantly, each of the models below is nontoxic and PFAS-free.

Weber Genesis S-415 liquid propane gas grill

Weber is practically synonymous with well-made grills. Their premium materials and sturdy, durable grills mean built-in energy efficiency and waste reduction. You won’t be replacing your Genesis S-415 liquid propane grill anytime soon.

The three-burner Genesis S-415 (also available in a four-burner model) features 513 square inches of cooking surface, porcelain-enameled, PFAS-free cast iron cooking grates, and Weber’s PureBlu burners for efficient, even cooking.

Propane grills are more popular than natural gas grills, primarily because they’re easier to use and transport, making them perfect for the backyard. They’re also easier to set up because they don’t require a permanent gas line – you’ll need to replace the propane tank when it’s empty (check with your local gas station or home improvement store about tank replacement services for responsible disposal).

“Best grill ever. Now I know why people love it,” wrote one buyer.

Broil King Crown S 490 natural gas grill made of stainless steel with 4 burners

A great PFAS-free grill for those who prefer natural gas, the Broil King Crown S 490 four-burner grill features four stainless steel dual-tube burners that ensure even heat distribution for perfectly cooked meals, as well as a side burner and a rotisserie burner.

The grill grates are made of cast iron and the body is made of sturdy, rust-proof stainless steel. This thing is built to last.

Keep in mind that a natural gas grill like this one requires a gas hookup, but if you choose a natural gas grill, you’ll have an unlimited supply of fuel, lower long-term costs (but potentially higher upfront), and no need to replace propane tanks.

Some reviewers say that it can take a while to install, but “once installed, it works wonderfully and has very nice features in a more compact size for my apartment balcony. I believe the value for money and quality is very good for the price.”
