They represent a range of organizations fighting for the rights and liberation of oppressed people and against the exploitation of workers.

They are pro-Palestinian and want the US to end aid to Israel, but also demand money for jobs, schools, healthcare, housing and the environment, not for war. They demand immigration rights and the legalization of all undocumented workers, defend LGBTQ and reproductive rights and an end to police brutality.

By 5 p.m., crowds began gathering in Union Park for another evening of protests by pro-Palestinian supporters.

They plan to march west along Washington Street to Hermitage Avenue and then to Maypole Avenue and 578 Park.

You leave the park via Maypole to Damen Avenue, then drive to Lake Street and back to Union Park.

On Thursday, several opposition groups were also seen in Union Park, dueling with pro-Palestinian demonstrators.

Former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy was spotted near Union Park on Thursday, and a brief scuffle broke out as protesters confronted each other.

He said he would be at the meeting on Thursday evening.

Organizers of Thursday’s rally said they were trying to ignore opposition groups and wanted to send a peaceful message.

Protests by the groups continued throughout the city throughout the week. Most protests were peaceful, but a large police presence was still visible in Union Park on Thursday.

On Monday, some protesters broke through an outer perimeter fence near the DNC.

And on Tuesday night, dozens of people were arrested after confronting police outside the Israeli consulate in downtown Chicago.

But on Wednesday, Chicago police remained present to confront a group of pro-Palestinian protesters who held a rally without a permit.

Officers let them march anyway, and Police Chief Larry Snelling said no one was arrested.

Some groups have security officers who ensure that the situation is de-escalated.

Snelling thanked the group for this in a press conference on Thursday, while organizers said they had been trained for this purpose.

“I can’t praise the organizers enough for having their stewards on site. And when someone got out of control, they stepped in, helped and calmed the situation down. So collaboration alone is very effective in achieving this,” Snelling said.

On Thursday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said he was proud of the police response.

“We do not cooperate with the police. We do not need their protection,” said organizer Hatem Abudayyeh.

Snelling said his officials would continue to determine the exact time of all rallies, including those that took place without a permit.

Early Thursday, pro-Palestinian protesters gathered near the cultural center at Randolph Street and Michigan Avenue.

The police worked with them and closed the street as necessary to keep the peace.
