Bristow community divided over new supermarket

Bristow community divided over new supermarket

BRISTOW, Oklahoma – Daks Market is coming to Bristow, but the community is divided over the opening of another supermarket.

The city administration says that the future Daks Market is located in a busy part of town. 2 News spoke to people who live in this area.

Susan Wells said she’s not so thrilled. Wells has owned her convenience store, Kemp Drug and Gift, for 20 years.

“I’m just very worried about little people like me,” Wells said.

Wells said business is already slow. She says increasing competition along Bristow’s Main Street is adding to her concerns.

“This is hurting the other grocery stores. They may have to close. Yes, that is a concern,” Wells said.

City officials say the property was vacant for several years before Dak bought it about three years ago. They say the opening will happen soon and people like Dava Harrington, who lives near Bristow, won’t have long to wait.

“I think it’s going to be great, great for the community and the people coming off the toll road,” Harrington said.

Harrington said Daks’ arrival in Bristow could contribute to the region’s growth.

“Everyone needs a job, everyone has to work. There’s not much money floating around here,” Harrington said.

2 News spoke to Bristow Mayor Kris Wyatt about small business concerns.

“I would like to believe that after the initial modern era, things will even out and we will all be successful,” Wyatt said.

Despite the benefits, Wells is also concerned about other facilities.

“I hope Bristow really does boom, but I’m still worried about the people who stay in business here,” Wells said.
