Firefighter: Roof failed shortly after his family bought their first home

HOMOSASSA, Fla. – A new house and a new baby – everything was perfectly prepared for Alex and Kierstyn Myers. “It was so exciting when we found the house,” Kierstyn said.

The couple put all their money into buying a house in Homosassa.

“I painted the baby’s nursery before she was born,” Alex said. By the time baby Raelyn arrived, everything was finished.

The Myers say an inspector found leaks in the roof, which the seller agreed to fix before closing.

“He had the whole roof repaired on the front lawn. He rebuilt everything and then the first rain the next day, the ground swelled. All over the house, more and more spots were swelling. Water came in through a lamp,” Alex said.

Alex, a Hernando County firefighter, says there’s also moisture on the walls and the baseboards are coming loose. But it’s the mold that forced them to move out and stay with Kierstyn’s parents.

“We didn’t like the thought of it starting to mold and harm her and what that might mean in the future,” Alex said.

The Myers say they did not have the house inspected again after the seller, Freedom Capital Alliance, LLC, repaired the roof because they were assured the repair was up to code and would be done correctly.

They admit they trusted too much. But they have an inspection contingency signed by the seller stating that they will make sure the roof is “properly installed and leak-proof.”

Both sides now have lawyers to argue about what happens next. In the meantime, the Myers are getting some help from the community through a GoFundMe page.

“It’s annoying considering we had prepared a place for them. We had everything perfectly prepared. But sometimes things don’t go as planned,” said Kierstyn.

I reached one of the sellers on the phone, who referred me to his lawyer who lives out of town.

I was told they would get back to me next week.
