Ladonia family seeks help after RV fire

LADONIA, Alabama (WTVM) – A family in eastern Alabama is asking the public for help after losing everything in a devastating fire Monday afternoon.

Cathy Hernandez says that although the structure of her mobile home, Ladonia, was not completely destroyed, nothing could be salvaged from the interior of the house where she has lived for 20 years.

“I’m very sad. I’ve done a lot,” she said. “I’ve enlisted the help of others. I’ve worked for nonprofits and done all sorts of things, and all of this makes me really sad.”

Cathy Hernandez fights back tears as she speaks from her home on Bayview Drive.

“Nothing could be saved,” said Hernandez.

The fire left behind damage that left only the outer shell of their house.

“When I left that day, all I had with me was what I was wearing. Everything was destroyed. There is nothing I could keep. I lost my pictures and everything else,” Hernandez said.

“It’s me, my two boys, my granddaughter and my daughter,” Hernandez said. “We need clothes and food and just different things. We have three outfits.”

According to initial reports from the Ladonia Volunteer Fire Department, the house was not a total loss.

“I’m not going against anything,” Hernandez added. “I think the firefighters and the EMTs did a great job. I just think the story isn’t quite true when they said they saved most of my house.”

She says firefighters were able to save a filing cabinet containing important documents like birth certificates and other important documents, but other than that, nothing is left. So now the family is starting over.

“Now I just feel lost. I don’t know what next steps I should take,” Hernandez said.

The family needs help to clean up the aftermath of the fire. Below are the names and ages of the victims, as well as their clothing sizes:
