Ella Emhoff took the stage on the final night of the Democratic National Convention to praise her stepmother, Vice President Kamala Harris, as a “patient, caring” person in her life who will fight for America. But she also once again attracted attention with her distinctive style: She wore an off-the-shoulder dress with a light blue bodice and a full white skirt designed by Joe Ando.

“Kamala came into my life when I was 14, a very easy time for a teenager,” said the 25-year-old model and designer. “Like many young people, I didn’t always understand what I was feeling, but no matter what, Kamala was there for me. She was patient, caring and always took me seriously. She never stopped listening to me, and she won’t stop listening to all of us.”

Emhoff was joined on stage by Harris’ niece, Meena Harris, and the vice president’s goddaughter, Helena Hudlin. Their appearance fit the family theme of the entire convention. Emhoff’s brother Cole also attended the DNC this week and introduced their father, Doug Emhoff, before his speech Tuesday night.

In recent weeks, as Republicans like JD Vance attacked Harris for the fact that she has no biological children, Emhoff defended her “Momala.” “How can you be ‘childless’ when you have cute kids like Cole and me,” she posted in an Instagram story last month. Emhoff then somehow hurt conservative sensibilities herself on the first night of the DNC, when she wore a camouflage-print Chappell Roan-inspired Harris-Walz cap. Her look Thursday night should, in theory, give them little to gripe about: very understated, very mindful.
